MORE ABOUT BEE
A long-time volunteer of the Venice Branch Library, Bee Colman, who was born Bernice Elaine Brofman, passed away at the age of 87 on July 15, 2021. A textile artist and designer, Bee taught as an esteemed member of the Cal State University, Northridge Department of Art for thirty-five years, a mentor to many well-known artists and a dear friend to countless former students. Bee’s creativity exceeded the limits of art exhibitions – beautiful tapestries, unusual scarves, and whimsical textiles, such as silk replicas of sushi. She was a creative host of Hanukkah dinners, where her artistic views converged with her passion for piano. Bee’s openness and living commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion gathered around her so many friends from different ages, backgrounds, gender, ethnicity, and religions.

She was a devoted patron and supporter of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Opera, the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, the Venice Branch Library, and several arts organizations. Library staff and patrons will remember Bee as the beloved star of the STAR (Story Telling and Reading) program at the Venice Branch Library, where she devoted much time and energy to bring the joy of reading to children.  Bee is survived by her son Ed, daughter Eileen, and extended family.
